Forest Avenue – An Incredible Dining Experience

Some lovely friends got us a voucher as a wedding gift for Forest Avenue and we could not wait to try it! Have heard so many great things from tons of different people about it.

Forest Avenue describes itself as “a neighbourhood dining room situated on Sussex Terrace, Sussex Road in Dublin 4. The restaurant is run by passionate husband and wife team John and Sandy Wyer. It is named after the street where Sandy grew up in her native Queens, New York. We serve modern food using excellent seasonal ingredients in relaxed, informal surroundings.”

The Saturday afternoon tasting lunch was one of the many great things we had heard about so we booked in for that a couple of weeks in advance.  Demand is high for a table at Forest Avenue so I would definitely recommend booking in early.

Once we arrived, just in time for our seating, we were greeted by a friendly host. The first thing that hits you is how spacious the dining area looks for a small space. The height of the mezzanine level helps with this and the exposed white-washed brick is quietly comforting. It almost feels like you have stepped into a New York loft apartment rather than a South Dublin restaurant

A Real Dining Experience…

We were seated at a beautiful large wooden table with impressively comfortable chairs. This gave us a fantastic vantage point of the whole restaurant floor. Sandy came over to greet us and double check we were still on for the tasting lunch and had no allergies, to which we replied positively and probably a little excitedly!

It wasn’t long before we were served up some warm fresh bread with smoked beef fat butter. Forget the rest of the courses, I’ll just have this!

Tiny Delicious Morsels

First up we were served an onion brioche, foie gras and duck skin. This tasted like a whole roast dinner in one bite and was sign of good things to come!

Course after course followed for the next couple of hours, each one as amazing as the last. Some of the stand out dishes were Salted cod croquette with ndula mayonnaise – beautiful bite sized chunks of fish, a Salad of organic tomatoes, peach, goat’s yogurt, courgette – incredible fresh tomatoes.

One of the highlight dishes was Agnolotti of parmesan, garlic scapes and roast cabbage broth. I’d never had agnolotti before and was curious to know what it was. It was a bit like ravioli stuff with parmesan and was Devine. The parmesan had practically melted inside and oozed out of the pasta. Swimming in the cabbage broth gave the outside a lovely salty flavour as you bite in to reveal the flowing parmesan spilling out.

There’s Always Room For Dessert!

Just when you think you can eat no more the salted caramel custard with coffee, and coconut cake arrives. You expect the custard to be sticky from the caramel but the whole thing is so smooth. James Brown smooth. Pieced together with the coffee ice cream, it’s like you’re eating the coffee chocolate from a tin of roses except this is actually nice. If those chocolates tasted like this they would not be the last ones left in the tin each year!

The tasting lunch for two people, with a glass of wine each, came to €150. We felt this was very reasonable given the amount of food we had eaten and the fact we were in there almost 3 hours.

We love a good tasting menu, and have been lucky to eat some incredible ones in Ireland, like the Tuesday tasting menu in Richmond, in Madrid, 15 course in the Michelin star A’BARRA, and in Lima, in the Netflix Chef’s Table featured Central. Forest Avenue is definitely up there with the best of them!
